Community Church Calls for Art Contest Depicting Newly Restored Chapel

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then what is the value of a drawing?

Representatives of the have yet to figure out the exact amount, but public relations consultant Pat Doering says it’s at least $100.

In addition to cash prizes, gift certificates to local major grocery stores and shopping outlets will be awarded to winners of an art contest sponsored by the church—which is intended to celebrate the completed restoration of its 125-year-old chapel.

“We wanted a way to celebrate preservation of the chapel, so we are asking participants to draw the chapel for this art contest,” said the Rev. Glen Larsen, church pastor.

Doering says the preservation project began in November 2011, and that the church has received $65,000 in donations from the community.

Larson added that of all the work that was completed, the steeple―which was found to be home to a couple of large beehives—was the most taxing.

“The steeple was a little more difficult to do because workers had to pull the shingles off and cover the old redwood rafters with plywood,” he said.

The art contest is open to those living or attending school in Poway or surrounding communities. Entries will be accepted from those who are preschool age to adults, and the deadline was recently extended to Thursday, May 31. The contest rules can be found here.

Doering says winning entries will be displayed at the chapel’s birthday celebration on June 23, a picnic event that will feature live entertainment, an antique auto show and tours of the chapel. Winners will receive one free ticket to the picnic, while tickets for the general public are $15 for adults and $12 for seniors, children under 12 and military.
