Councilman Cunningham Gives Ellie's Lane Hike Review

Councilman Jim Cunningham gave his review of his hike of Ellie's Lane, a 9.2-mile hike if you trudge the whole way, or a 3.5-mile trek if you make a loop.

Cunningham said for those who do the whole hike, there is a 1,600-feet gain and the trail will take about 5 1/2 hours.

"It's difficult," Cunningham said, "but it has beautiful views."

The smaller, 3.2-mile loop takes 2.2 hours, according to the councilman.

The hike is suitable for hikers, bikers and horse-riders and those who enjoy scenic landmarks can find the infamous Table Rock at the turn around point of the Ellie's Lane hike.

"There is a eucalyptus gorge and when the wind blows, it sounds like people playing drums in there,” Cunningham said.

Want to hike to Iron Mountain but don't want the fuss of crowds? Cunningham said Ellie's Lane will connect you to the big mountain without all the foot traffic.

"It's a great, great hike, very well-marked," he said.

The next hike for interested Powegians is Sunday, June 30, at 11 a.m. at Blue Sky Canyon Ecological Reserve. The hike runs for 2 1/2 miles and is easy enough for families to enjoy together.

Bikers can't take their wheels down into Blue Sky, but horses are welcome.

“You’ll never, ever regret hiking the Poway trails,” Cunningham said.
