A stretch of southbound Interstate 805 will be closed tonight to enable crews to remove overhead freeway signs, state transportation officials said.

The southbound freeway from the Interstate 5/805 junction to state Route 52 will be closed from 9:30 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday, according to Caltrans.

Drivers will be detoured onto southbound Interstate 5, then eastbound state Route 52 to northbound or southbound Interstate 805. Signs will advise of the closure and detour, Caltrans officials said.

Caltrans officials said the removal of the freeway signage is part of the first stage of a $587 million project to build carpool lanes from near state Route 52 to north of Mira Mesa Boulevard.

Plans include a direct access ramp from southbound Interstate 805 at Carroll Canyon Road, bridge widening and noise barrier modifications.
