484 County Women Receive Mammograms, Break World Record

Close to 500 women throughout the county joined to receive mammograms Thursday, setting a world record in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, officials said.

Kaiser Permanente teamed with Susan G. Komen for the Cure to host breast- cancer screening clinics throughout San Diego County, officials said. The events at 10 Kaiser Permanente locations set a world record, with 484 women receiving mammograms.

"One out of eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. We know that mammograms save lives by detecting breast cancer early and encourage women to take charge of their breast health not just during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but monthly by  performing monthly self-breast exams," Susan G. Komen for the Cure  spokeswoman Sandy Rabourne said.

A Guinness Book of Records adjudicator was on hand and announced the event set a world record for the most mammograms on one day in multiple locations. The record was the 11th set by Kaiser Permanente since 2010 to call awareness to illness prevention, officials said. 

"Today we hope patients' lives will be saved," said Mary Ann Barnes, senior vice president and executive director for Kaiser Permanente San Diego.
