At their 38th Annual Meeting, The San Diego Foundation announced Steven R. Smith will be stepping into the role of Chair and Stephen P. Cushman will join its Board of Governors. The San Diego Foundation's Board of Governors is composed of approximately 30 volunteers with diverse professional backgrounds, who are involved in many community and charitable activities. The Board oversees The Foundation by establishing policy, setting priorities, and making final decisions to approve awards and grants.

They each have a strong commitment to civic leadership and are strategic visionaries. Additionally, they provide their years of experience to enhance The Foundation’s mission.”
Steven R. Smith is a Professor of Law at California Western School of Law. Guided by a deep belief in the importance of civic engagement, Steven joined The Foundation’s Civil Society Working Group serving as Chair from 2004-2009, and currently serves on the Executive, Audit and Our Greater San Diego Vision committees, and is Chair of the Board Governance Committee. Steven was the Dean of California Western School of Law from 1996 to 2012, following eight years as Dean at Cleveland-Marshall Law School. He is committed to educating “lawyers who will contribute to improving the lives of their clients and the quality of justice in our society.” He is the former Deputy Director and remains active in The Association of American Law Schools and in the American Bar Association. He is the past Chair of the Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar. Steven received his BA from Buena Vista College and his JD (Order of the Coif) from the University of Iowa. He resides in San Diego in the community of Point Loma.
Stephen P. Cushman is currently the President of Cush Enterprises, Chairman of the College of Business Administration Board at San Diego State University, as well as on the Board of Directors at the San Diego Convention Center and the Downtown San Diego Partnership. As a fourth generation San Diegan, Steve has continued the Cushman family tradition of service to our community. He has been actively involved with more than 70 Boards and Commissions and is committed to making San Diego an even better place to live. Steve began his career in publishing and then spent 25 years in the travel industry. During that time, he established his automotive dealerships, The Cush Automotive Group, and was a recognized leader in the automotive sales industry before its sale in 2006. Steve holds a degree in Business Administration from California Western University and resides in San Diego in the community of Scripps Ranch.
The San Diego Foundation’s 38th Annual Meeting was held on July 17, 2013, at the Chula Vista Bayfront Park. The event marked the launch of new branding for The San Diego Foundation and the two robust and critical centers its home to - the San Diego Center for Charitable Giving and the San Diego Center for Civic Engagement. The San Diego Foundation now features the tagline “Growing a Greater San Diego” inspired by all the work going on within the two centers. The San Diego Center for Charitable Giving puts their client’s passion into action advising clients on charitable giving and managing nearly 1,900 donor advised funds. Inspired by donor-driven grantmaking and the diverse interests of their clients, the San Diego Center for Charitable Giving’s new tagline is “Your Vision. Your Passion. Your Legacy.” Following the Our Greater San Diego Vision initiative, the San Diego Center for Civic Engagement was established to work for our San Diego community to create solutions that will build our collective future. Inspired by the cooperative work we will embark on with the community, the San Diego Center for Civic Engagement’s new tagline is “Our Community. Our Solutions. Our Future.”
