Scripps Ranch man planning diabetes cycling fundraiser

Scripps Ranch resident John Jenkins, a certified financial planner, has been named chairman of the Tour de Cure planning committee, a group of volunteers organizing logistics for the 2014 Tour de Cure cycling fundraiser benefiting the American Diabetes Association (ADA) on Saturday, May 17.

Jenkins, 63, has participated as a rider in the fundraiser since 2011. His daughter, 34, has lived with type 1 diabetes since age 8. Other members of his family have passed away from the disease.

“We ride because we can change the future and make a positive impact in the lives of those who are affected by diabetes,” said Jenkins, founder, president and CEO of Asset Preservation Strategies, Inc. “When your reason for supporting the cause is strong enough, then there is nothing you won’t do to stop diabetes and fund research for a cure.”

A San Diego native, Jenkins has worked in the financial industry since 1982. He has a masters degree in wealth strategies planning from the Estate and Wealth Strategies Institute at Michigan State University, and is a fellow of Esperti Peterson Institute for High Net Worth Planning, a professional organization for planning professionals. He graduated from Clairemont High School (class of 1969) and San Diego State University in 1977.

At this year’s Tour de Cure ride, the 14th annual, more than 1,000 riders are expected to help raise more than $530,000 in donations for diabetes research and programs and services for people with diabetes. People who have diabetes will be recognized with a “Red Rider” jersey to wear on the day of the event. Registration information is available at www.diabetes.org/sandiegotourdecure. Registration cost is $25 per rider, with a minimum fundraising donation of $200 per rider.

Four routes of 7, 26, 62 and 100 miles will be offered for riders of all ages and skill levels. The start and finish line is Torrey Pines High School, 3710 Del Mar Heights Road, San Diego. The routes throughout San Diego’s North County coastal areas will include oceanfront scenery in Del Mar as well as backcountry roads in the North County that are popular with cyclists.

The San Diego Tour de Cure is one of 90 Tour de Cure fundraisers held annually in U.S. cities.
