Poway Unified’s Design39Campus Advances Toward Fall 2014 Opening

With grading complete, foundations in and buildings under construction for Poway Unified and Del Sur’s newest school, the K-8 school known as Design39Campus is advancing toward its August 2014 opening.

Anyone driving by the site at Lone Quail Road and Camino Del Sur across from Del Norte High School can spot the buildings going up. They include a multipurpose room dubbed “The Showcase,” the cafeteria area, the fitness lab/gym and outdoor pavilion with its large, angled roofline, the Welcome Center and two classroom buildings.

“One of the joys of building in Del Sur has been our relationship with Poway school officials,” said Bill Ostrem, president at Del Sur. “Our concern for having quality schools in our community matches the district’s mission, so working with them in planning and construction of the new school as we did with Del Norte High and Del Sur Elementary has been rewarding.”

Students living within participating Community Facilities Districts may choose to participate in the new school’s selection process, or attend their neighborhood school.

When completed, Design39Campus – the last to be built in the respected Poway district – will have 156,000 square feet of learning space with 56 teaching stations, a gym/pavilion, an amphitheater, a fitness trail and more. In designing the school, the architectural team concentrated on flexibility of space, use of natural light and technology. Covering 22 acres, the campus can accommodate 1,500 students.

“Watching the school rise from the ground, both from a construction and curriculum standpoint, has been absolutely inspiring,” said Sonya Wrisley, Principal of Design39Campus. “We can’t wait to share this beautiful and innovative campus with students next Fall.”

San Diego architecture firm BakerNowicki Design Studio designed the school. The contractor is Echo Pacific Construction.
