2012 Primary Election: Poll Workers Still Needed in Poway

Voters will be heading to the polls on Tuesday, June 5.

With the June primary election just over two weeks away, the Registrar of Voters is still looking for poll workers in Poway. The registrar hires workers fluent in many languages, with English and Spanish speakers needed in Poway on June 5. Workers don’t need to live in Poway to work in a Poway precinct, but they must be U.S citizens, registered or eligible to be registered to vote in California, and have transportation to and from their assigned polling location. Depending on the assignment, poll workers may need to complete online training or attend a two-hour class. Poll workers start early and end late, but it does come with a $75 to $175 stipend, and bilingual workers may be eligible for an extra $15. Potential poll workers can apply …

Poll: Do Newspaper Endorsements Influence How You Vote in Elections?

U-T San Diego makes a big push for Carl DeMaio as San Diego mayor. Does it help or hurt?

As a policy, Patch does not endorse candidates in elections. But we back any effort to explore all sides of a race or ballot initiative. We have a standing invitation to all incumbents and office-seekers to blog on Patch—giving them direct, unfiltered access to their communities. But it’s traditional for newspapers to endorse candidates for local, state and national office. Locally, U-T San Diego on Sunday used a wrap-around of the front page to display its editorial backing of Carl DeMaio for San Diego mayor. In light of media fracturing—with many sources of news and opinion available—do newspaper endorsements still carry any weight? Do people take cues from the local metro daily or the free weeklies? Or are these efforts now meaningless?

GOP Trumps Democrats in Poway Voter Registration, Freshest Figures Show

City was 47 percent Republican, 24.7 percent Democrat and 23.9 percent unaffiliated on April 30.

Updated at 9:55 p.m. May 4, 2012 Poway has nearly twice as many Republicans as Democrats, according to voter registration data released this week. Confirming the city’s conservative status ahead of the June 5 primary election, the county Registrar of Voters Office said the GOP outnumbered Democrats here 13,020 to 6,858 as of April 30. With 27,702 registered voters, Poway has 6,623 declining to identify themselves by any party, nearly the same total as the Democrats. The next-biggest affiliation in Poway is the American Independent Party,* with 789 members, say the figures (attached). Then come the Libertarian Party (179) and the Green Party (100). By percentage, the city is 47 percent Republican, 24.7 percent Democrat and 23.9 percent not …

The American Independent Party figures in Poway and in California are distorted because research shows that most of the voters who affiliate with the old George Wallace party now do so believing they are registering as independents. Those who choose not to affiliate with a political party in California actually are classified as "declines to state". Poway's major party registration figures are …   more ›

Saldaña Campaign Picks Up Brady Endorsement

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence announces an endorsement in the race for the 52nd Congressional District.

Released by the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence: The Brady Campaign and its network of California chapters Tuesday announced their endorsement of Lori Saldaña for election to Congress in California’s 52nd Congressional District. The primary will be held on June 5. As a former California Assembly Member representing the San Diego area, Saldaña repeatedly proved her commitment to strong gun laws and to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people by earning a 100 percent voting record with the Brady Campaign. In 2010, she showed her leadership on public safety issues by authoring legislation to ban the carrying of openly displayed handguns in public. “Lori Saldaña saw the threat to law enforcement officers and to communities across …

Since the only violence the Brady Campaign (and Saldana's laws) ever seems to prevent is legally justified self-defense, this endorsement might as well be from the Criminals Union.   more ›

NATO, Healthcare, ‘Robber Barons’—50th District Candidates Discuss Issues

Terri Linnell, Connie Frankowiak, Michael Benoit and David Secor answered questions at a forum Wednesday night in Ramona.

Four candidates challenging incumbent Rep. Duncan D. Hunter in the new 50th Congressional District answered questions at a forum Wednesday night at the Ramona Library. Ramona Forum, a liberal progressive group, hosted the event. Candidates attending were Terri Linnell (Tea Party Republican of Ramona), Connie Frankowiak (Democrat from Julian), David Secor (Democrat of Crest) and Michael Benoit (Libertarian of Lakeside). Hunter didn’t attend. He earlier had sent a letter saying his schedule didn’t allow it. Linnell is a homemaker. Frankowiak and Benoit describe themselves as activists. Secor is retired from working for the Superior Court. Dave Patterson, president of Ramona Forum, moderated the event. About 15 people were in the audience. …

Poll: How Can State Become a Player in Picking Presidential Nominees?

California has long suffered irrelevance in the primary process. Can this be changed? How?

Now that Rick Santorum has dropped out of the GOP race, Mitt Romney is all but crowned as the party’s nominee. Back in January, the president of the California Republican Assembly spoke of the state’s stepchild status, telling the Sacramento Bee: “Sadly, we are irrelevant [in presidential politics]. Come June, there will be a nominee. We will not have been at the table.” Celeste Greig, the CRA leader, echoed the longtime gripe that California rarely has a hand in deciding presidential nominees—except for acting as their campaign ATM.  The 2012 primary was moved to June as a result of Assembly Bill 80, which was sold as a cost savings. In earlier years, California presidential primaries were June 2 (1992), March 26 (1996), March 7 (2000), …

Poll: Does Mitt Romney’s Wealth Help Him as a Presidential Candidate?

Republican’s Easter vacation in La Jolla sparked renewed debate over his show of affluence.

Mitt Romney and family played in the surf near their La Jolla home over the Easter weekend, prompting renewed scrutiny of his wealthy lifestyle. On Monday, the Obama administration signaled that Romney's 13.9 percent tax bracket in 2010 would become a 2012 issue. The president’s campaign also is making an issue of Romney's Swiss bank account. Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois has been quoted as saying:“When is the last time a presidential candidate for the United States had a Swiss bank account? I think the answer is never.” Does Romney's wealth help or hurt him as a presidential candidate?

American Independent Party Endorses Stahl for Congress

The Republican candidate for the 52nd District welcomes the AIP endorsement.

The American Independent Party has endorsed John Stahl in the race for the 52nd District Congressional race. Stahl is a Republican running for the seat in the newly redrawn district that includes Poway. “We have reviewed the candidates in the race and find that John best supports our principles and priorities,” Markham Robinson, AIP executive committee chairman, said in a statement.  Other candidates in the race include incumbent Republican Brian Bilbray, Port Commissioner Scott Peters and Assemblywoman Lori Saldana, both Democrats, and former Santee Mayor Jack Doyle, a former Democrat running as an independent. The California-based AIP is the third-largest party by registration in San Diego County and statewide, according to a press …
