Put Your Money Where Your Health Is

If you don't take charge of your health, no one else is going to do it for you.

In my circle of friends, I’ve developed a pretty good reputation for being the “go-to girl” for all things health, wellness and sports. Over the past week, I’ve talked to three of my friends who were suffering from various healthy issues. They kept making excuses for why they wouldn’t get their issues resolved. Most of the reasons stemmed from a feeling that they couldn’t afford to get the help they needed. I asked them, "If you aren’t spending money on your health, then what are you spending your money on?"

Financially, times are tough and I completely get that, but now is not the time to let your health go. If you look at your budget, see where you can cut back in order to maintain your health insurance and even seek out alternative forms of medicine. I am a huge fan of doctors and modern medicine, but I am also a fan huge fan of acupuncture, , , naturopathic physicians, , osteopaths and energy work.

It can seem a little bit unnerving to try alternative forms of medicine, especially if you don’t understand how they work. I remember the first time I tried acupuncture. I was in physical therapy for back pain and was not getting any better. It was actually my physical therapist who recommended I try acupuncture. She thought the combination of physical therapy and acupuncture could really help me, and she was right. Sometimes we need a combination of therapies to keep our body running smoothly.

If you think you might benefit from alternative forms of medicine, here is some advice.

1. Get a recommendation and ask around to see what types of treatments have helped other people.

2. Do your research and find the right physician for you.

3. Check with your insurance. More and more plans are covering “specialty” treatments like acupuncture, chiropractic, and massage therapy.

4. Follow your instincts. You know your body better than anyone and if you think you would benefit from additional medical help then seek it out until you find what works for you.

If you don’t make your health a priority in your life, then no one is going to do it for you. You must be your own advocate. You might think you are saving money by neglecting your health, but it may cost you in the future. Get feeling better-you are worth it!
