30 Under 30 San Diego County Leader No. 8: Nathaniel Broughton

Creating million-dollar companies is nothing new to this 28-year-old.

Nathaniel Broughton is used to the spotlight.

At 28, the entrepreneur has been involved with a number of profitable and award-winning startups making millions of dollars over the last 10 years. Broughton, who got his foot in the door when he worked for a company called Show-Me Tickets, kicked off his venture in 2005 with Plus1 Marketing.

Eventually, he began to partake in other startups, such as LakeRentals.com, SuretyBonds.com and GrowthPartner.com.

Though he isn't a stranger to a bit of recognition, Broughton finds his accomplishments in other areas than the dot-coms.

"Some of the awards and press mentions might be more traditional signs of accomplishment, but it's the friends and connections that matter and I can always carry forward," he said.

A product of the University of Missouri, Broughton said he finds his inspiration from colleagues such as Jim Wang, Scott Scheper, Brent Beshore back in Missouri, and Josh Kayser with the SuretyBonds.com business and his wife, Kristi.

" I look at these guys and know that in 20 years they will be incredibly successful people," he said. "It's a foregone conclusion. It inspires me to be around them and expect a lot out of myself to keep up with them."

Advice for young people:

"Find a rich and successful person. Work for them for free. Get experience. Show up every day. And remember that developing a network over time is equally as valuable as hands-on experience in a business. Never pass up a networking event. Always walk over to the guy across the room and extend your hand."
